5 Reasons To Shop For Insurance

-5-

YOU MAY BE OVERPAYING

All insurance companies see fluctuations in their prices. Being undercovered is arguably worse than having no coverage at all - but many insurance companies will reserve discounts for customers that might be eyeing the door. If you find that your policy is carried by a company that only gives you their best price when you threaten to cancel, find a better company and cancel!

YOUR INSURANCE IS OUT OF DATE

Twenty years ago, the industry standard was to recommend a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in bodily injury liability, and $50,000 in property damage liability. Twenty years ago was 2002, when nobody knew what a smart phone was and it cost $499 to buy one. Now they're everywhere and a new phone can easily run for over one thousand dollars.

Twenty years ago, a visit to the hospital over a car accident would have cost only around $100,000. Fancy new smart phones aren't the only things that have gone up in price. Most agents in 2022 will recommend carrying $250,000 per injured person, $500,000 per accident, and $200,000 in property liability.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT'S OUT THERE

Today's insurance shopper is discount hungry, and for good reason. Many companies offer special rates for safe drivers, or special discounts for young drivers, and fantastic rates for drivers who just don't spend a lot of time on the road to begin with. If you present a lower risk to your insurance company, why pay like you present a high risk? Take advantage of safe driving and pay-by-the-mile auto insurance. We have the technology, and so do you.

-2-

THERE IS NO REASON TO PUT UP WITH LOUSY SERVICE

Over the last twenty years the insurance industry has witnessed a trend toward low rates and minimal customer service. With insurance, and especially automotive insurance, you get what you pay for. How often has your insurance carrier reached out to you after your initial signup to offer new discounts, new products, better coverages, or to make sure your needs are being met? There are agents out there who will go to bat for you. Make sure you've got one, because having a man or woman on the inside can be indispensable when it's time to file a claim.

YOU MAY NOT BE PROPERLY COVERED AT ALL

Today's insurance sales process is a consultative process. Any time you pick up that phone and get a quote, you should be looking for a sales agent who knows the right questions to ask. Here's an example: You are a home owner and have two cars as well as a boat and a motorcycle. All are products that need to be insured. Does your sales rep ask about the pool in your back yard?

If you've got one, you might consider carrying an umbrella policy for excess liability - because accidents happen, even to people who trespass on private property, and you don't have to be a millionaire to get sued like a millionaire.

How often does your insurance company review your insurance plan and ask about potential risk exposures? If the answer is "Never," get on the phone and get shopping.
